Exhibit honors women of color in Joliet

An opening-night program highlighting the influence of women of color on American music will combine film, discussion, and exhibition access.

Titled Rebel Music: Women of Color Who Changed the Beat, the event marks the public debut of a month-long cultural installation examining artists whose work helped define genres such as rock, soul, funk, and punk.

Presented by BBFF Entertainment in partnership with the museum, the evening centers on a documentary screening followed by a moderated conversation. The film traces the creative and cultural impact of performers often excluded from mainstream music history, using archival material and commentary to reconnect their contributions to modern sound. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will formally open the exhibit, setting the tone for an evening focused on recognition, legacy, and artistic influence.

The program is restricted to guests 21 and older due to the presence of a cash bar. Attendees will have full access to museum galleries during the event, along with the screening and post-film dialogue hosted by Black and Brown Femme Films.

Admission to the exhibit and opening-night activities is included with the purchase of a standard Joliet Area Historical Museum ticket. No separate charge is required for the film or discussion.

Poster printing may be used to create signage that will be placed throughout the museum to highlight partners.

This music event will take place on February 21st. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the program will run from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, 204 North Ottawa St, Joliet, Illinois.
