Joliet celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and there are several events taking place in Joliet to celebrate.

The University of St. Francis is featuring a month of special events this month. There will be spoken word performances, music, and several guest speakers. Terry Cottrell will discuss "Bound Africans vs African-Americans,” and another event will be the Black Card Revoked Trivia Night.

The 2nd Black History Celebration will be held later this month. The theme is "Guiding us to better places". A short play will be performed with Shayla Day-Davenport portraying Harriet Tubman. This will be followed by a talk from motivational speaker Karen C. McElrath. The evening will end with a question and answer session. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

It is important to recognize Black History Month and Joliet flyer printing companies are often asked to provide advertising materials for the events taking place in the community.

"Bound Africans vs African-Americans" will be held at the Sexton Auditorium on February 19 beginning at 6:00 PM. The trivia contest will take place at the Marian Abbey on February 15. Call 1-800-735-7500 for more information.

The history celebration will take place at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theatre on February 25. There will be performances at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Tickets are $5 each. To find out more, call 815-724-3761.
