New canine employee joins Frankfort school district

The first four-legged member of the staff is now part of Summit Hill School District 161 in Frankfort.

Davis is the new facility dog for the school district and will be working in Frankfort Square and other schools in the district to help staff and students. She has already made a positive impact, calming a student who was in distress when the student’s parents left to drop the student off at school.

Kelly Robinson, a social worker who works with the Social Emotional Resource (SER) program at Frankfort Square, said that the presence of Davis’s predecessor, Sunny, in the district has led to increased participation and engagement in class, students being more relaxed, and improved student behavior. Local Print shops often assist with creating Flyers and other materials with more information about the benefits of ideas like this.

Robinson added that she has wanted to get a facility dog for the district for quite some time. As the theme for the district this year is “Think BIG,” she proposed the idea to the district’s superintendent, Dr. Paul McDermott. McDermott expressed his amazement at the connection the students had with a therapy dog and the improvement in their behavior. He carried out additional research and believed that a therapy dog would benefit the district.

Davis is a certified facility and comfort dog and understands both basic and advanced obedience skills.
