Frankfort schools holds cake decorating contest

Students from the Frankfort School District 157-C recently presented a special culinary experience at Grand Prairie Elementary School.

The event was organized by the district’s Family School Partnership (FSP) and its past president, Tina Kohler. Kohler said that kids today are watching many shows on television that have baking and cake decorating contests and she thought to create such an experience for the kids and have them participate in their own cake decorating contest.

There were 66 students in the event, such that there were no more than nine students per grade level. The contest required the students to take two round cakes, stack them, and use white icing to decorate them. They needed to select two other colors and pipe additional decorations with round and star tips. They could add stars, rose, hearts, and other items to demonstrate their creativity.

The final products were judged based on neatness, design, and the use and combination of colors. The winners in first place received a complete cake decorating set and those in second place received a gift certificate from Nothing Bundt Cakes for a free bundlet. The announcement of winners of such contests often turn to poster printing to make the community aware of such accomplishments.

There were other activities at the contest that included frosting-making demonstrations, pasta- and pizza-making demonstrations, and presentations on kitchen safety by the Frankfort Fire Protection.
