The Frankfort Park District is looking to purchase the property of the Borg Warner plant which is closing at the end of this year.
A non-binding advisory question about investigating the purchase was supported by 56 percent of the residents. The park district sees is as an opportunity to increase recreational facilities and programs, including turf fields, fitness, swimming, and sports. Such districts often turn to flyer printing to provide more details about such projects.
The next steps are now being taken by the park district, which includes developing an architectural design, engaging the community, and creating costs and an operating budget for the space. The park district will also be deciding on when to propose a binding referendum to the residents for the purchase of the property.
Gina Hassett, executive director of the district, said that the work of the district is about to commence. Hassett added that the property needs to be evaluated, including operating and construction costs to ensure that the project is affordable. Hassett said there appears to be excitement about the prospect but due diligence needs to be done for the sake of the community.
The earliest that a binding referendum on the purchase would be presented to voters would be March 2022. If approved, it would be another two years before the project would be completed.
