Township reshapes its online presence

Edwardsville Township has created a new website, increasing transparency and bringing it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Frank Miles, the township supervisor, said the aim of the project was to make it easier for Edwardsville residents to access information about their government. He added he wants the information to be accessible to users whether they're on their home computers or on a mobile device.

Perhaps the most important part of the site is a “transparency center”, which allows visitors to the website to access financial records of all kinds, including annual financial reports, budgets, and lists of the bills and expenditures dealt with by the township. Minutes from the city's monthly meetings are also available, as well as agendas for upcoming meetings.

A special section is devoted to the history of the township, and provides links to local points of interest, and the website has also been designed to make it easy for people to use with assistive devices, as desired under an ADA Transition Plan approved last May.

Since it is sometimes difficult for even computer users to hear about an innovation, especially if they do not visit a site regularly, the city could work with a postcard printing company to create a card for mailing to residents, inviting them to log onto the new website.
