What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

SIUE to present timely comedy

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville’s (SIUE) Department of Theater & Dance in Edwardsville, Illinois, puts on a season of performances that runs from October through April, and is now getting ready to present a comedy that could brighten up the winter months.

According to an article in the Intelligencer, the department is putting on Alan Ball’s ‘Five Women Wearing the Same Dress’ at the Katherine Dunham Theater on the SIUE campus. The New York Post has called the play “wonderfully entertaining” while the New York Daily News described it as a “fresh-as-a-daisy comedy, funny as can be.”

The five women of the title are bridesmaids at the snooty Knoxville, Tennessee wedding reception of Tracy Marlowe, and are hiding out in Tracy’s sister Meredith’s upstairs bedroom to get away from the party downstairs. The five are widely differing characters, including a young fundamentalist, the lesbian sister of the groom, a survivor of a failed marriage, the bride’s rebellious younger sister, and a cynical beauty who may be falling for another ‘bad boy’. Although wildly different, the women discover a common connection as they talk. The play reveals the problems and issues facing women today.

The play will be performed February 15-18 at 7.30 pm, and on Sunday, February 19, at 2:00 pm.

Performances like these can be enhanced if producers work with poster printing companies, which can create colorful, attractive posters to advertise each production.
