What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Piano face-off as concert season commences

Spanky’s Dueling Pianos, a popular act that usually closes an Edwardsville concert series, is switching places and is this year’s opening act.

Edwardsville’s Wildey Theatre is the setting of the Winter Concert Series, which offers several events. The Dueling Pianos evening features two pianos placed face-to-face. Two professional pianists then take requests from the audience, and play anything requested, from Tupac to the Rat Pack, rock, country, hip-hop, Top 40, big band hits, or anything else the audience likes. The show is driven entirely by the attendees’ requests, and is appropriate for people of all ages.

Katie Grable, the assistant director of parks and recreation, said the tradition has been to have the series closed out by Spanky, but this year, she decided to try something new and start the season with the popular concert. She added she hopes everyone gets the message, since this particular concert always sells out. Planners of events like this can use flyer printing to create mailers for residents, announcing the schedule.

Grable also said the event is popular because audience members are sure to hear some of their favorites, but because it is an all-request evening, it remains fresh every year.

Spanky’s Dueling Pianos kicks off the Winter Concert Series on November 16, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $9 for the show, or $14 for the show and pre-reception, and are on sale now. They’re available online, by phone, or at the Wildey box office.
