Owl expert to speak in Edwardsville

Mark H.X. Glenshaw, aka the ‘Owl Guy’, is scheduled to speak at the Edwardsville Public Library.

Glenshaw’s topic is ‘Forest Park Owls: Mating, Nesting, and Owlets’. The upcoming talk is his third visit to Edwardsville.

Over the years, Glenshaw has conducted a number of ‘Owl Prowls’ in Forest Park. This time, he says, his focus is on how, where, and when owls nest, and how they mate. He also plans to discuss their slow maturation press. Glenshaw says this is a topic of interest, since in 10 years, the owls he has been studying have had only had 23 owlets.

Glenshaw has captured film of mating owls, something that had not been done until the 1990s, and says he has seen hundreds of matings. Other films will feature owlets dropping from their nests to take their first flights, as well as learning how to fly, hunt, and land. Glenshaw says watching the films of young owlets is exciting, like watching a baby taking its first steps.

Last December, Glenshaw gave a talk at Wild Birds Unlimited, a store on Troy Road. Two months before that, he appeared at the library. He says Edwardsville residents, and the library in particular, have been very supportive, and he is always glad to visit the community.

With the event taking place next Monday, November 14 at 7:00 pm. Libraries like these can benefit by working with poster printing companies, which can create colorful placards to direct attendees to events.
