What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Madison County slashes prices on radon test kits

Edwardsville residents, and residents everywhere in Madison County, are being urged to check their homes to make sure they are not contaminated with radon. To help in this effort, the County is offering radon test kits to residents at a very low price.

Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas that is caused by the radioactive decay of uranium, a naturally occurring process. It enters homes by rising from rock through soil, and coming in through holes and cracks in their foundations.

Officials of the Madison County Health Department (MCHD) believe it's important for everyone to test their homes, as exposure to the gas can be a cause of lung cancer. The department's health protection manager, Erin Broester, is urging residents to take advantage of the County's offer and buy a radon test kit.

Broester said residents could get a kit from the MCHD office in Wood River, at 101 E. Edwardsville Road, any time between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Staff members will be on hand to explain how to use the kits, which are priced at $6. They will also share information regarding radon itself, how it is measured, and how it can be mitigated.

Measures of this importance should be brought to everyone’s attention, so officials could work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for area residents.
