What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Local house to put on fundraiser this month

A fundraiser is planned to help the Stephenson House in Edwardsville.

The event will include a dinner, a silent auction, and an oral auction, with proceeds going to maintain the house. Bella Milano is providing dinner, which will include prime rib, cavatelli (small pasta shells) with meat sauce, and chicken Milano.

Also on the bill for the evening is a preview of Dr. Sid Denny's play ‘Murder in Edwardsville’. The play is based on an actual incident that took place in 1825, when James W. Stephenson, Palemon Winchester, and James Henry were indicted for the murder of Daniel D. Smith. Stephenson was later released on bond, as was James Henry.

The funds raised at the event go to maintain the Stephenson House, and to fund its educational programs as well. The house's executive director, RoxAnn Raisner, says that no historic site can survive on just its admission charges; it has to have fundraising events as well. She adds that the house, which is almost 200 years old, needs ongoing maintenance, for which funding is always required.

The auction and dinner is scheduled for Friday, March 18. The event starts at 5:30 pm, with dinner to be served at 6:00 pm. Event organizers might consider creating brochures that give a brief history of the house, and list some of the items for auction as well.
