What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Edwardsville welcomes art exhibit

The Edwardsville Art Center is getting ready to set up a new exhibit, which may change some people's minds about art and artists.

The exhibit is entitled ‘It's Funny Between Us: Collaboration in Contemporary Art’, and will feature artwork created by artists in collaboration.

Part of the purpose of the exhibit is to change the stereotypical perceptions that artists work alone, and that art cannot be funny. The exhibit's co-curator, Nick Martin, revealed he became involved in the project after Brigham Dimick, one of the art center's board members, asked him to curate a show about collaboration. Dimick was one of Martin's professors, and the two discussed the benefits of working collaboratively many times.

After accepting, Martin immediately called Ben Mepham, a colleague and friend from his days at Purdue University. The two had collaborated successfully, and thought it would be fun to work together on the exhibit. Since the show is about collaborative artworks, the duo thought having two curators would be appropriate.

The exhibit will focus on humorous art, since both Martin and Mepham reject the idea that art must be serious, or “relevant”. They find value in things that exist only to make people laugh, and want to share these pieces.

The show opens August 7 with a reception, which is scheduled for 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The exhibit continues through September 4. The curators could work with a banner printing company on a festive flag to display at the entrance.
