Edwardsville wants residents views on trail proposal
The City of Edwardsville, working with the Madison County Transit Agency, would like to construct a trail to connect the MCT Nature Trail to Route 157 and Center Grove Road, and city officials would like to know what residents think.
The proposed connector would run from the west side of the IL Route 157 underpass to the intersection of 157 and Center Grove Road. The connector would become the southern edge of a four-way intersection of various trails.
Sight lines need to be improved if the intersection is expanded, and in order to do so, the underpass's culvert sections will be removed and replaced with a new section that offers better visibility. The present nature trail will have to shut down for several weeks in order for the work to proceed, and to protect pedestrians and bikers in the work area. When projects like this are undertaken, officials can use poster printing to create informative signs to help people find alternate routes.
A detour will be available that will lead users from the underpass's east side, to the sidewalk that runs south beside Route 157, eventually arriving at the Center Grove Road crosswalk. People using the detour will cross 157 at the crosswalk, and then continue on the finished trail on the underpass's west side.
The work on the trail connector is scheduled to begin in Fall 2019. Residents are invited to send comments to publicworks@cityofedwardsville.com, or stop at City Hall to fill out a form.
