Edwardsville student foursome given scholarships

TheBANK of Edwardsville recently announced the four students from throughout the area who will receive scholarships via its Community Scholarship Program.

The four are Kaleb Rakers, who attends Belleville West High School; Kira Patrylak of Collinsville High School; Althoff High School's Emma Murphy; and Austin Huang, who attends Edwardsville High School. The scholarships award each student $2,000 yearly for four years. The four were chosen for their positive character and leadership qualities, both in academia and in their communities.

TheBANK launched its scholarship effort in August 2000, at which time it pledged $1.3m to be awarded to seniors graduating from local high schools over the following 30 years. The program is administered by the Greater Edwardsville Area Community Foundation, whose selection committee interviews the finalists and chooses the ultimate recipients of the scholarships. The foundation's governing board is made up of residents.

According to TheBANK's president and CEO, Kevin Powers, the scholarships were established to help educate the area's future leaders. He added that the applicants in general this year were extremely impressive, and the chosen students were exceptional. He offered his congratulations and noted that he and others are eager to watch the recipients' progress.

Awards like this are important to many people, so officials might consider working with a brochure printing company to create a booklet for local area mailing, describing the program and how to apply.
