Edwardsville Police to host yearly Youth Academy

Registration is now open for the upcoming Youth Academy, hosted by the Edwardsville Police Department.

The academy is held each year for girls and boys, ages 12 through 16, as a summer activity that is informative, challenging, and fun. The academy's founding principles are knowledge, responsibility, and citizenship, with a strong focus on bridging the gap between young people and the police.

The academy wants to build these relationships and offers activities that develop leadership, build teams, increase confidence, and improve physical fitness. Organizers of courses like this can use printing services to create course materials.

Some of the activities might include:

• problem solving
• a citizenship class
• learning (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) CPR and first aid
• a leadership class
• a hike covering several miles
• a community service activity
• a trip to Raging Rivers Water Park to swim
• land navigation skills

Young people who take part in the academy will be required to attend daily. The program is two weeks long, and is intense, meeting Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. The location is the gymnasium of St. Mary's School on Madison Avenue.

The academy runs from June 3 through 14, and interested people should apply now, as only 25 spots are available. Students attending either parochial or public schools in Edwardsville will receive priority. An awards/graduation banquet will be held on June 14, beginning at 6:30 pm.
