What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Edwardsville okays playground work

After some discussion, Edwardsville trustees decided to approve repairs to the Boundless Playground at Edwardsville Township Park, according to an article in The Intelligencer.

The playground was originally built by volunteers in 2013, but improper installation, as well as usage, have worn off the surface, which now requires replacement.

A Boundless Playground is an area where everyone—children and adults, with or without disabilities—can learn and play in a welcoming, fun environment. The Edwardsville playground was the first “boundless” one in the St. Louis area, and one of only 200 in the country at the time it was built.

Fred Schulte, the township supervisor, said that workers had been able to repair areas where the surface had settled, but when the installer took a look, he found depletion on the coating after five years, when it was expected to last for ten.

The coat was installed by Cunningham Recreation, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, who will be back to make the repairs. When asked why someone else did not get the job, Township Administrator Jeanne Wojcieszak said Cunningham is the only company that installs this type of coating, and that the problem was more to do with the way the base was put in rather than the coating itself. There is no word on when the recoating will take place.

Improvements like this are important to many people, so officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, letting them know the schedule of the work and a tentative completion date.
