Edwardsville dedicates pavilion in Corlew Park

Sally and Mark Speciale, along with friends, city officials, and family members, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently, opening the Nick Ursch Memorial Pavilion in Corlew Park in Edwardsville.

The pavilion is dedicated to the memory of the Speciales' grandson, and they donated $50,000 toward the cost of construction, according to an article in The Intelligencer.

The Speciales have both lived in Edwardsville their entire lives. After the ceremony, Mark said they had decided to give something back to the community they love. Making it possible to build a new park, which also gave them a way to honor their grandson's memory, was the perfect choice.

SJ Morrison, the Alderman for Ward 4, said Corlew Park is only one of many made possible by contributions from business leaders and members of the community. In this case, the Speciales made their contribution via the Better Place to Play Campaign, which raises money for Edwardsville parks, both those currently in use and those still in the planning stages.

Corlew Park came with a price tag of $1.3m, but it is almost entirely paid for, thanks to grants and donations. Morrison called Leon Corlew Park a ‘huge asset’ for Edwardsville, and ‘very impressive’, adding the city was grateful to the Speciales for their donation.

Officials might consider working with a brochure printing company to create info about the park, and make it available for visitors who come to the site.
