Edwardsville considering options for new official building

The City of Edwardsville is considering adding a basement to its new Public Safety Building, though plans have not yet been finalized.

The city's aldermen voted on February 2 to approve an agreement with FGM Architects for additional engineering and architectural services that would allow the city to solicit bids to add a basement to the building. The original contract did not include a lower level.

Alderman Janette Mallon wanted to know why the basement was not included in the plans for the building in the first place, and was informed by Alderman Janet Stack that it was omitted to keep costs down. However, Stack also said the time to ask for additional work on the building is now, since bids will probably go out within the next two to three months.

Hal Patton, Edwardsville's mayor, said there was no guarantee the city would be able to add a basement to the building, but he felt that signing an agreement to investigate the potential cost is worth it, since both the fire and police chiefs have said a lower level would be beneficial to their departments.

The building comprises 40,000 square feet, with construction costs estimated at $13.5m. Adding the basement could cost another $1m.

City officials might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, informing them of progress on the project and soliciting comments.
