What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Edwardsville building getting a facelift

An Edwardsville boutique store known as the Gingham Buffalo is moving from Center Grove Road to North Main Street, and improving its new location in the process.

The Buffalo's new home has been a used car lot and a gas station, among other things. In order to bring the building's facade more into line with its business, Steve Stewart and Chris Beard requested funds from the city's commercial building facade program to improve the building’s appearance. Work began in August.

When Stewart and Beard applied for money for the facade improvements, several issues were raised by people who were concerned that renovating an historic structure would compromise the feel and look of the downtown area, by transforming the building into something resembling a suburban retail store. However, after discussions, the Historical Preservation Commission decided to approve the plan as it was presented to them.

Hal Patton, the mayor of Edwardsville, said the new enterprise will fit well with the rest of the businesses downtown, and provide a good transition to the northern end of the city. The Gingham Buffalo will provide retail space for use by interior decorators.

Beard and Stewart might consider having 2016 calendars printed that show the building's new facade, as well as interior rooms. They could give the calendars away as promotions to invite designers to consider locating in the building.
