What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Edwardsville anticipates huge bike race

For the eighth year in a row, Edwardsville will be the setting for a race that will bring thousands of spectators to watch as hundreds of cyclists race on the city's streets.

TheBANK of Edwardsville Rotary Criterium Festival offers racing, live music, and food and drink provided by local organizations.

There are eight high-speed races on the schedule, for both amateur and professional riders. The cyclists will cover a 0.7-mile course that loops through downtown Edwardsville. The races start at 3:00 pm with the final challenge of the day, the Cat ½ pro racers, beginning at 9:00 pm. There is a $10,000 prize for the winner, which is one of the largest in the area for a one-day race.

USA Cycling officially sanctions the race, which is hosted by Edwardsville Township, the City of Edwardsville, and the Edwardsville Rotary Club. Among the sponsors of this race are Anderson Hospital, Plocher Construction, and World Wide Technology.

There are four races for children planned as well, divided according to age; kids' races start at 6:45 pm.

Those cheering on the racers can listen to Exit 12, a local band, as well as Robert Perry Band with the Original Mojos and Old Salt Union. The fun starts around 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 19.

Organizers often use banners to decorate venues and indicate the layout of racecourses prior to events like this.
