British rock band to play Edwardsville
A British band has been touring for decades, and is celebrating 50 years on the road with a stop in Edwardsville.
Wishbone Ash first got together in 1969 in Torquay, Devon. The founding member, Martin Turner, had formed another band in 1963, where he was joined by Steve Upton in 1966. When that group folded, the two went on to form Wishbone Ash, with Ted Turner and Andy Powell.
The band was most successful in the 1970s, releasing six albums between 1970 and 1976. The group was famous for the use of the harmony Ted Turner and Andy Powell played on twin lead guitars, a technique that led to the duo being named “Two of the Ten Most Important Guitarists in Rock History” by Traffic Magazine; Rolling Stone placed them in their list of “Top 20 Guitarists of All Time.”
Wishbone Ash has been a strong influence on other groups. Among the bands that cite them as an influence are Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Halen, and Iron Maiden. A review of a recent performance says:
“Great classic rock and roll with a great 70s band. . . . All band members engaged the audience and performed exceptionally well. Can’t wait to see them again!”
Wishbone Ash will be celebrating their decades together at the Widley Theatre on September 18 at 8:00 pm, and again September 19 at 7.30 pm. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts advertising events like this.
