Blogger's address to cap conference at SIUE

Erasing the stigma of mental health issues and helping students express their concerns has been the aim of PostSecretU, a suicide prevention conference being held at SIUE. The conference ends with a presentation by Frank Warren.

Warren created the popular blog PostSecret, giving people a safe place to discuss their most personal issues in a supportive atmosphere. The blog gives its name to the conference, PostSecretU, which is a joint effort of Active Minds at SIUE and iCARE. Organizers of meetings like this, which address a specific topic, can use flyer printing to create a handout with a list of resources.

Active Minds is a nationwide nonprofit concerned with the mental health of college students. It supports a network of chapters on college campuses throughout the country, such as the one at SIUE. iCARE is the acronym for Initiative to Create Awareness, Recognition and Education, which was created at SIUE to help members of the university community recognize the behavior of a student who may be considering suicide.

The conference, which has been ongoing for several weeks, is an attempt to create a safe place where students can express their desires, fears, and regrets, share their secrets, and perform acts of kindness, free from the stigma that often comes with mental health issues.

Warren will appear at the Meridian Ballroom at SIUE in Edwardsville tomorrow, September 12, at 7:00 pm.
