Putting the pieces together in Crystal Lake

Jigsaw puzzle lovers will come together for fun and competition at Puzzlepalooza next month.

Presented by the Crystal Lake Parks Department, the event features two- and four-person teams who will race to complete the same 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. There is also a recreational division for those players who are less competitive.

Civic groups who organize activities like this often use flyer printing to help spread the word about the event.

The history of puzzles dates back to the 18th Century when pictures were painted on flat pieces of wood and then cut into tiny interlocking pieces. The term jigsaw comes from the cutting tools used at that time.

The pastime is popular with all ages, with some of the biggest puzzle enthusiasts competing nationally and even internationally. Since 2019, Spain has hosted the annual World Jigsaw Puzzle Championships.

In Crystal Lake, the four-member competitive teams are expected to complete the 500-piece puzzle in 50 to 70 minutes. There will be prizes for first, second and third place finishers. Players are encouraged to bring their own snacks to the tournament and can also enjoy a sundae bar after prizes are awarded. In addition, there will be a puzzle swap where old puzzles can be traded for new.

All ages are welcome to participate and can register online as an individual or as part of a team. Puzzlepalooza will be held Sunday, March 23 at Grand Oaks Rec Center in Crystal Lake beginning at 10:00 am.
