Marianos grocery coming to Crystal Lake
Mariano's, a specialty grocer serving the Chicago area, is set to open a new location in Crystal Lake, according to an article in My Suburban Life.
City officials believe this store could bring in hundreds of jobs, will be instrumental in reinvigorating the area, and could generate as much as $35m to $40m annually in sales.
Crystal Lake's community development department went after Mariano's specifically, because the company has what they call a “catalyst” effect on the communities where it operates. The director of community development, Michele Rentzsch, said the grocer often becomes something of a regional attraction because of its “vibrant” and “attractive” nature, and tends to attract other businesses to the area.
John Melaniphy, president of Melaniphy & Associates, Inc., a consulting and market research firm, says that Crystal Lake food stores had $107m in sales in 2015. He believes that when Mariano's opens, those revenues could increase by 30-40%, which in turn would increase the city's revenues.
Mariano's is taking over the old Sears location. The new store will comprise 74,800 square feet, with construction starting as soon as demolition of the Sears store is finished.
Mariano's anticipates opening its Crystal Lake location in 2018. New stores often work with a flyer printing company to create a handout highlighting any specials available during their early days.
