What's Happening in Crystal Lake, IL…

Lecture series starts in Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake residents who are interested in social and environmental issues have a chance to learn more about these subjects over the next couple of weeks.

McHenry County College is presenting a three-lecture series exploring climate change, growing food locally, and solar energy. The lectures are called the ‘Great Lakes Bioneers’ series and kicked off last week with a presentation on solar energy.

Still to come are lectures on climate change, and local food growing. The former is entitled ‘Our Changing Climate’ and will be given by Professor Donald J. Wuebbles from the University of Illinois. Wuebbles and seven other researchers and faculty members from the university shared in the 2007 Nobel Prize for their work with Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Wuebbles will talk about his work on the panel, and its major findings, with particular attention to the Great Lakes and Midwest region.

The final lecture will be presented by Jeanne Nolan, who wrote the organic gardening book ‘From the Ground Up’. She will describe ways in which her company has helped people grow their own food in natural ways.

The final two lectures in the series are February 18, and February 25. Both talks begin at 7:00 pm in the Luecht Conference Center at the McHenry County College's Crystal Lake campus. The talks are free, and open to anyone.

College officials might work with a flyer printing company to create handouts for the series, describing the lecturers and their work.
