Here comes Johnny Appleseed Festival in Crystal Lake
There will be a special 31st annual Johnny Appleseed Festival in Crystal Lake, as this year marks what would be his 250th birthday.
Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman, was a pioneer orchardist and American legend who introduced apple trees to Illinois, as well as a number of other central states, northern West Virginia, and Ontario, Canada. He worked in his first orchard in 1800 and a few years later began a lengthy canoe voyage to distribute seeds to other areas. Chapman was known for his generosity and kindness and was an early conservationist. A number of historical sites and museums have been created to commemorate his vision and influence. Poems, a prayer, and songs, including one called “Here Comes Johnny Appleseed,” were written in his honor.
Lisbon, Ohio held the first Johnny Appleseed Festival in 1968 and, over the years, other communities, including Crystal Lake, have joined in the tradition.
Families gather each year for the day-long celebration of the start of the harvest season and the bounty it provides. The event is presented by the Downtown Crystal Lake organization and includes rides, a petting zoo, children's games, axe throwing, live music, food trucks, and vendors.
The event would not be possible without volunteers and more than two dozen area merchants, financial institutions, groups, and organizations who support the annual event. Having a good logo design is important for sponsors in order to highlight their businesses.
The Johnny Appleseed Festival will be held September 28 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in downtown Crystal Lake.
