Dual discipline athletes to compete in Crystal Lake
The 7th annual Crystal Lake Aquathon brings together athletes of all ages and abilities to swim and run their way to the finish.
Held at the Three Oaks Recreational Center in Crystal Lake, it's the only aquathon in the state and is held as a fundraiser for Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois. This non-profit organization is committed to supporting girls' physical, social and emotional skills through healthy, upbeat programs that include running.
The aquathon sprint distance event is a 500m swim and a five km run, while athletes in the Olympic distance race will swim one mile and run 10 km. The other timed events are one and two mile swims.
For kids ages 7-12, the distances are 250m for the swim and a one-mile run. They can choose to team up with another young athlete and enter a relay option.
Adaptive athletes can participate in a one-mile race which allows for in-water support from a mentor as well as the use of any adaptive equipment that may be required.
Swimmers will navigate around three islands in the lake and if the water temperature is below 78 degrees, organizers have the option to permit the use of wetsuits.
Awards will be presented at a post-event celebration for first through third finishers in the Sprint, Olympic and two mile swim categories.
Athletes in the children's race will receive their swim cap, a finisher's medal and a swag bag. Promotional products such as these are often sourced from area printing companies.
