What's Happening in Crystal Lake, IL…

Crystal Lake wins recognition for its fire protection services

The Insurance Services Office (ISO), an agency that evaluates fire departments for insurance purposes, has raised the Public Protection Classification (PPC) for all businesses and residents that the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department serves.

These jurisdictions include the City of Crystal Lake, the Village of Lakewood, and the Crystal Lake Rural Fire Protection District. All three now have the rating of Class 2. Previously, the PPC was Class 3 for those areas with fire hydrants, and Class 6 for those without.

ISO examines more than 48,000 fire departments across the country. By raising its classification, ISO has placed Crystal Lake's fire prevention services in the top 2.17% of all departments in the country for fire suppression. ISO surveys communities and updates their classifications, which are then used to determine insurance ratings.

Although not all insurance companies use ISO's findings to calculate their rates, many do. Generally speaking, if a community has a good PPC classification, residents will pay much less for fire insurance than if their community has a lower PPC score. City residents may want to contact their insurance companies to see if they use ISO scores, and if so, how the improved rating will affect their premiums.

Agencies like these can benefit by working with postcard printing companies, which can create cards for a mass mailing to inform residents of changes like the improved classification ratings.
