Crystal Lake to host golfing event
The Chili Open Golf Classic tournament is coming up in Crystal Lake this February.
Chili Open is a longstanding tradition that originated in 1970, thanks to restaurant owner Francis Haznow of Haznow’s Lakeside Tavern and Crystal Lake Park District (CLPD) Rec Director Jim Oerkfitz. Oerkfitz would arrange and manage the winter golfing tournament, which consisted of a par 32, nine-hole course. Meanwhile, Haznow would prepare between 50 to 60 gallons of hot chili for the players to enjoy.
The 2021 Chili Open Golf Classic tournament will continue this community tradition at the Crystal Lake Park District. Registration fees are priced at $125 for foursomes and will close on the day of the tournament. All players must be 18 years of age or older. Participants are advised to wear facemasks to the event. Flyer printing is a popular choice for many organizers of local events to use in order to create physical handouts of event information and rules for people who are interested.
The event will start at 8:00 am and players are advised to arrive at the tournament 10 minutes early, as foursomes are set to proceed every six minutes. Teams will each receive a bowl of chili and a gift.
This year’s Chili Open Golf Classic is set to proceed on Sunday, February 13 beginning at Main Beach.
