Crystal Lake Thanksgiving race feeds the community
The Crystal Lake Food Pantry will be the big winner in the community's annual Thanksgiving 5km race.
Local runners and walkers will warm up for a big holiday dinner with a fast-paced race or a casual morning stroll around the community in support of the local charity food provider.
Non-perishable food donations and direct cash contributions will be collected from race participants as their entry into the event.
The food pantry has been providing those in need with nutritional food and other needed personal items for more than 40 years. It is set up similar to a grocery store, providing clients with a pleasant and welcoming shopping experience.
For that reason, it is suggested that race participants make a monetary donation, as the organization has more buying power when purchasing food and other goods such as paper products.
In addition to receiving individual donations, the food pantry volunteers make weekly trips to area grocery stores to pick up donated meat, produce, and other items to stock their shelves.
Presented by the Hillstriders Running Club, the 5km event starts in Lippold Park near Route 176 in Crystal Lake and is a certified route with markers every half mile. Organizers of races such as this often use banner printing to assist participants in staying on course.
The run begins at 8:00 am on Thursday, November 28. Late registrations will be accepted in the park on race day from 6:30 am to 7:30 am.
