Crystal Lake swims for a cure
A fundraiser is coming up in Crystal Lake that will allow swimmers to challenge themselves and raise money for ALS research at the same time.
The event is called “A Long Swim,” and is a series of swimming events conducted in open water. The distances of the swims vary, and include a 1,500-meter swim; a 1.2 mile swim; a swim of 2.4 miles; and a 5K. Open water swimmers and triathletes will have a chance to examine the effectiveness of their training under the conditions of a real race. The swims will be professionally timed, and are led by Doug McConnell, who swam the English Channel.
The venue is Three Oaks Recreation Area, an abandoned quarry known as Vulcan Lakes. Visitors to the park have described it as being a beautiful, well-kept area, where the water is clean and clear. Swimmers have been given several incentives to raise funds: they might be able to waive the fee for registration, and earn swimming gear suitable for both open water swims and triathlons. They can also earn transition bags, on-course goggles, and wetsuits.
The Long Swim is scheduled for June 7, from 6:00 am, when the doors open, until 9:30 am. The swim starts at 6:30 am. Those who wish to register on the day may do so for an additional $15. Poster printing can be used to advertise this type of event.
