Crystal Lake race to continue to honor community leader

The Bob Blazier Run for the Arts in Crystal Lake has special meaning this year with the passing of its namesake.

First held 29 years ago, the 5K race was started in support of Bob Blazier, a community supporter, leader, volunteer, and businessperson. Blazier passed away earlier this year at the age of 98, but the race will live on in his name. Often referred to as “Mr. Crystal Lake,” his legacy includes more than 60 years of community service to business, education, and healthcare.

The race is presented by the Raue Center, a performing arts facility that Blazier helped to make a reality. At the time of the first charity run, he asked that it be held in support of the non-profit theater he was working to open as part of a revitalization of downtown Crystal Lake. The race has continued in his name ever since. The Raue Center has a mission of making the arts accessible to everyone and, as such, offers financial assurance for tickets and classes.

Community members are encouraged to run the 5K, walk one mile, or join the event as a supporting spectator. Organizers of similar charity races often use banner printing to highlight their cause.

The Bob Blazier Run for the Arts will be held Sunday, May 4 at 8:00 am, beginning at the arts center on Williams Street in Crystal Lake.
