Crystal Lake plans night bike ride
A favorite summer activity is returning to Crystal Lake this year, after taking a year off.
The Night Owl Ride is a fundraiser for the Land Conservancy of McHenry County (TLC), an organization dedicated to preserving the county's woodlands, wetlands, and prairies, either by purchasing the property, or accepting it as a donation.
The event was begun in 2012 to promote cycling as a means of exercise and transportation in Crystal Lake. There was no event in 2018, but the Night Owl is coming back in 2019 with renewed support from the community. Events like this are often promoted through flyer printing.
Lisa Haderlein, the TLC's executive director, said people look forward to the ride each summer, adding the Conservancy is happy to organize the event to show off some of the parts of the county where people can enjoy riding their bicycles. Proceeds from the ride go to the Conservancy to help it protect McHenry County's open spaces.
The main route covers about 22 miles, though a shorter “family friendly” ride is also available. Among the landmark riders will pass are the Prairie Ridge Conservation Area, Stearns Woods, and Ridgefield Trace Trail.
Only 500 riders will be allowed in the Night Owl, which is scheduled for August 3. It will start from the Crystal Lake City Hall complex on West Woodstock Street at 10:00 pm. The fee for riders of all ages is $15 in advance, or $20 on the night of the ride.
