Crystal Lake on the move for mental health
Mental health awareness is the focus of the NAMIWalks McHenry County event to be held in Crystal Lake next month.
Expected to engage more than 500 attendees, it will also aim to spread the word to many others in the community. The importance of the event is evidenced by a 2023 health needs assessment study in which 53% of survey respondents reported that access to behavioral health services was one of the highest needs.
NAMIWalks is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which is dedicated to improving the lives of millions who have psychological disorders. It is the largest US grassroots organization with this type of focus. Now a strong voice for mental health, the organization was started by a few families around a kitchen table in 1979 and expanded to become a coalition of more than 600 local affiliates working for the cause.
NAMIWalks is called the "the walk that has no finish line." It is intended to provide new beginnings, raise money to fund programs and education, and expand knowledge about mental health.
Not just a walk, the event includes a large resource fair, family activities, music, and raffles, as well as food and beverages. Organizations who present events such as this often rely on stationery printers for their promotional materials.
NAMIWalks will be held Saturday, October 5 from 9:00 am to noon at Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake.
