Crystal Lake offers sweet class
Crystal Lake residents who long for tasty fruit in the cold winter months have two choices: wait until the next growing season, or learn to make preserves. This month, people will have a chance to learn how to preserve fresh fruit so it can be used long after the season is over, because the Crystal Lake Park District is going to teach canning.
The class includes information about the history of making preserves, as well as step-by-step instructions in ways of making canned jam.
The class is slated to be held at the Colonel Palmer House, located at 660 East Terra Cotta Road. The house was built in about 1858 by Henrietta and Gustavus Palmer, who had settled in the region. In 1985 the home, still on its original site, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Colonel Palmer House houses the Crystal Lake Historical Society, and is maintained by the park district.
The class will be held from 6:30 until 8:00 pm on June 16. The deadline to register is June 13, and the title is “Canning Jam,” with the code #9096-0. The fee is $20, but residents receive a discounted rate of $15. Interested parties can register on line with the park district, or at the district's administrative offices on Crystal Lake Avenue.
Park district officials could work with a poster printing company to create placards to display in town, announcing the class.
