What's Happening in Crystal Lake, IL…

Crystal Lake brings back the 'Chautauqua of 1916'

In a few weeks, a recreation of the Crystal Lake Chatauqua – a phenomenon from the early 1900s – will once again bring musicians, lecturers, and humorists together to perform for the community.

The Crystal Lake Library plans to read ‘Aesop's Fables’, and will use puppets to act out the tales. Both adults and children will be able to play sports that were popular long ago, such as croquet and lawn tennis.

Chatauquas were community gatherings that lasted from three days to a full week, during which time professional performers and lecturers came to the venue—usually a small town—to sing opera, present Broadway plays, show movies, and deliver lectures. The circuits were managed by various agencies, who contracted with the performers and set the schedules. Towns contracted with these agencies to have the event brought to them, and raised funds to pay for them. From July 13 to July 18, 1916, Crystal Lake was the site of a Chatauqua, and now, 100 years later, residents can experience this unique event again.

The recreation of the original event is called the ‘Chautauqua of 1916’, and is scheduled for July 17, 2016, a Sunday, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. It will take place at the Colonel Palmer House, and is hosted jointly by the Crystal Lake Historical Society and the city's park district. The event is free.

Agencies like these can benefit from working with a banner printing company, which can create fun, festive banners for various events.
