Crystal Lake brings back popular Ice Fishing Derby

Anglers who love to sit in the freezing cold in the hope of enticing a fish to bite will be able to enjoy their favorite sport soon, as Crystal Lake is bringing back its Ice Fishing Derby.

The Crystal Lake Anglers hosted the event many times, and now the Crystal Lake Park District Nature Center is taking over. The derby is an all-day event offering cash prizes, raffle prizes, food, contests, and fishing, which will take place at West Beach. Proceeds from the derby go to fund the program that restocks the fish in Crystal Lake.

There are few things for attendees to keep in mind. First, the district is encouraging participants to pre-register. Those who do will receive a free raffle ticket. Pre-registration can be arranged at crystallakeparks.org, the code to use is 242306-01. The fee for entry is $10, and for those who pay on the day of the derby, only Checks or cash will be accepted. Finally, attendees 16 and older must have a current Illinois fishing license.

A number of cash prizes will be awarded. The grand prize is $400, and will go to the angler who catches the biggest fish of any kind. There are also smaller prizes for catching pike, muskie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and walleye. Organizers can use graphic design to create suitable awards.

Pre-registration this Wednesday, February 6, and the derby itself is Sunday, February 10, from 7:00 am until 12:00 noon.
