What's Happening in Crystal Lake, IL…

Budget given go-ahead in Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake's city council recently approved the city's annual budget.

There was no discussion about the budget, which is for $105.1m. The emphasis this year is on capital expenditures, with special attention given to improving the city's sewer and water systems. The next fiscal year started May 1.

Funding for needed work will come from various sources, including the city's reserves, which will be used to pay for almost half of the capital projects, which total about $27.6m. Approximately $6m will come from Crystal Lake's tax on motor fuel, which is limited almost solely to road projects and their associated costs.

Street projects planned for the year are anticipated to costs $9m, and include about $2m in resurfacing and maintaining streets, widening South Main Street, and doing the necessary engineering work in order for improvements to be made to the intersections of Main Street and Crystal Lake Avenue, and Main Street and Route 176.

Improvements to the wastewater and water systems will be paid for by bond issues, plus a low-interest loan the city will take out from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The loans will be repaid by increasing sewer and water rates.

The city might consider working with brochure printers on a mailer for residents explaining the budget, the improvements it will be making, and the measures needed to implement it.
