Plans for future of Davenport marsh available to the public

The Nahant Marsh Education Center in west Davenport has created a new draft master plan.

Local Print shops can often assist in creating Brochures, Flyers, and other materials with more details about such plans.

The Nahant Marsh Education Center is a wetland preserve and non-profit organization that spans over 300 acres. Brian Ritter, the executive director of the center, said that it was time for a new plan to guide the center for the future, and to provide continuity even as the board members and staff change over time.

The plan outlines the creation of more recreation trails, meaning the 1.75 miles of available trails now will be expanded to seven miles in 10 years. Some of these trails will have crushed rock as a surface, while others will be paved.

Other aspects of the plan include creating both habitat and revenue, a wetland mitigation bank, and potentially a preschool based on nature. Additional parts of the plan include taking care of a contaminated Carp Lake dump site, building more parking and classrooms, and purchasing between 200 and 300 acres of land within a radius of three miles. It is also envisioned that handicap access will be increased and there will be more restrooms, a playground, the installation of better signage, and overlooks for marsh property.
