Gordon Lightfoot is probably best known for his soulful ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” based on the real-life sinking of the ore carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in November, 1975.
However, the haunting song is only one of many accomplishments in Lightfoot's long career. He was born in Canada and studied jazz orchestration and composition in Los Angeles for two years in the 1950s, before returning to Ontario. He toured in Europe in the 1960s, at about the same time he began building his reputation as a songwriter. His material has been recorded by stars such as Elvis Presley, Judy Collins, The Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
A concert review says:
“The man still has it! The show was fabulous. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer. I could have listened to him all night long. He is truly amazing to be still performing. I feel truly blessed!”
Lightfoot was originally scheduled to appear in September 2019, and was rescheduled for March 25, 2020, before that too was postponed due to the pandemic. He is now set to be at the Adler Theatre at 8:00 pm on October 5. Tickets for the earlier performances will be honored at the upcoming concert. Poster printing is often used to publicize events like this.
