On May 1, crews in Davenport began sealing streets in various parts of the city. This effort means motorists will face temporary parking restrictions, rolling lane reductions, and some short-term closures of various thoroughfares.
Crews are asking that drivers slow down, and keep an eye out for equipment and Signs in areas where work is being done.
Crews are sealing cracks in streets before they go on to cape seal the streets, or apply a micro-surface. Cape sealing involves several steps including preparing the road, then spraying oil on the surface. After that, aggregate is spread and then a roller presses the material into the oil. The following day, any extra aggregate is removed, and finally, a layer of slurry is put over the chip seal. The end product is a smooth-textured black surface that increases durability.
Streets already under repair are South Birchwood, Palmer Drive, East 13th Street, Northwest Boulevard, West 2nd Street, and East Locust, with many more to be treated. Once all the street work is complete, the contractors will come back to clean up any aggregate, and restripe markings and pavement lines.
City officials warned residents that the resurfacing will create dust, but that the entire process should be finished by May 26, depending on the weather.
Projects like this can benefit if officials work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, listing projecting work schedules and road closures.
