Davenport police get ready to help seniors see Christmas lights

A proud tradition is continuing in Davenport, as registration for the Senior Light Tour opens.

Every year since 1995, the Davenport Police Department have been providing senior citizens with a safe method of seeing the city’s displays of Christmas lights.

Each year, more than 500 people participate in the event, according to Hank Jacobsen, a corporal with the Police Department, which is the sponsor of the event. Tours are conducted by buses, which drive to the various light displays throughout Davenport. Jacobsen says seeing the lights makes everybody smile, and puts people in the holiday spirit. This may be particularly important for older people, who sometimes have no family left to celebrate with them.

The Center for Active Seniors Inc. (CASI) operations director, Teresa Garrison, says seniors may find it difficult to get out and enjoy the Christmas lights as they have done in the past. CASI makes buses available that are easy for seniors to access.

The tour will take place on December 14, beginning at 7:00 pm. Although the tour is free, participants must be registered to take part.

Since the date is so close, the event organizers could create Banners to hang in senior centers, advertising the tour. Printers can create them quickly, so they will be installed in time for people to make the necessary arrangements.
