“Waitress” has now been rescheduled, and people who are holding tickets will have them honored on the new date. In a reversal of what seems customary—basing a film on a play—the musical is a play based on a film. The movie, which starred Keri Russell, was released in 2007.
The producers of the play, Fran and Barry Weissler, bought the stage rights for the movie shortly after it was released, and announced their intention to produce a stage version after the Tony Awards ceremony in 2013. The show opened on Broadway in April, 2016, and closed in January, 2020, after 33 previews and 1,544 performances.
The movie and play tell the story of waitress and baker Jenna Hunterson, who is pregnant and trapped in an abusive marriage, and involved in an affair. When a baking contest is announced, she sees the grand prize money as the way out of her difficulties. On Broadway, the cast actually baked pies, which made the whole theater smell wonderful and enhanced the experience.
A review says the show:
“ . . . restores your faith in humanity and lightens your step just a little as you head back out into the night . . .”
“Waitress” will be at the Adler Theatre on March 23, 2021. Poster printing has long been a successful means to advertise events like this.
