Davenport discusses new YMCA

Leaders from Davenport and other area cities met recently to discuss a campaign to bring a new YMCA to Davenport. They talked about what the new facility would mean for the city, and how the effort is progressing.

The Y would provide an indoor track, new exercise equipment, a full-size gym, and two pools. The structure would be three stories tall, and have windows that overlook the Mississippi River, and the city’s downtown.

Caroline Ruhl, who is the Scott County YMCA campaign’s co-chair, says one of the main reasons for developing the new YMCA is to support local kids, noting that the Y is not simply another business, but a place that can serve as a haven for local children. She wants to help them build good character, be decent young people, and avoid getting in with the wrong crowds. Managers of facilities like this can work with a business card printing company to insure all employees have these useful business tools.

Ruhl became involved in the effort because one-fifth of Davenport’s residents need some sort of assistance, and the YMCA never turns anyone away. People who would like their kids to learn to swim, or play sports, or who simply need childcare, are welcome.

The new building would stand near the ‘Quad City Times’ on 4th Street; the one currently in use dates back to 1963. Thus far, the campaign has raised $7.2m of its $12m goal.
