Google Fiber, a fiberoptic network, is coming to Sandy Springs.

Representative from internet giant Google recently met with city council members to explain how the network would be set up.

Google’s local partner manager, Amanda Shailendra, said the company will build the network from scratch, and that it will comprise about 7,000 miles of fiber throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area.

In Sandy Springs, Google plans to construct two huts to serve as hubs for the city’s network. The first will be located at Fire Station No. 1 on Spaulding Drive, and the second will be located at the Sandy Springs Tennis Center on Abernathy Road.

The huts are about 12 by 30 feet, enclosed in a compound of about 32 by 50 feet. According to Shailendra, the huts will be designed and constructed to blend in with their surroundings. At the fire station site, Google will landscape the area in front of the hut, but will make sure the work does not impact the access of fire trucks to the station. The hut at the tennis center will be located near the site’s dumpsters, with a nine-foot wall blocking residents’ view of both the hut and the dumpsters.

City officials might want to consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, explaining the physical installation of the network, and the services it will provide.
