Sandy Springs program expands urban canopy

The Sandy Springs' branch of the Fulton County Library system has an activity in the works that will celebrate Earth Day in a tangible way.

The Library has partnered with Neighborhood Forest to host “Get a Tree, Grow a Tree,” which will teach children some of the basics of urban forestry. The registration system is currently open, and parents or guardians are encouraged to sign their child up now.

The activity will see saplings distributed to the registered children, and they can take their new green friend home to plant. Anyone who would like to help but does not have a child is welcome to purchase a tree as a gift or make a donation.

The organizers will collect the registration information and then choose the sapling species based on a variety of factors, including hardiness zones and native range. They have partnered with UPS, as well as tree nurseries, and volunteers will also be lending a hand. The final list of species will be released in April.

Urban forests provide a variety of benefits, and inviting the public to participate in their planting and care can help turn them into stakeholders in these projects. A brochure printing company can prepare planting guides, registration and order Forms, Letterheads, and other materials for an environmentally focused activity.

The registration system for this initiative will be open until Sunday, March 15. A link to register for the program is available on the Library’s website.
