The Atlanta Braves are leaving their home park, Turner Field, which is located in Atlanta, and moving to a brand-new stadium, SunTrust Park, located in southeast Cobb County.
The new stadium is scheduled to open in April 2017, and Sandy Springs officials are already working with their counterparts in Cobb County on the traffic and parking issues being raised by the presence of such a large sports arena in the vicinity.
Keith Zgonc, Sandy Springs' deputy police chief, said he and others went to the headquarters of the Cobb Police Department early in July to find out which agencies will be involved. The Sandy Springs Police Department's representative at the Cobb PD will be Sergeant Scott Levy.
Among the problems to be ironed out are whether or not traffic will be diverted onto Sandy Springs' streets on game days, where people will be allowed to park, and who will pay the police who handle the traffic details. In addition, thousands of people work along Peachtree Dunwoody Road, which is already heavily traveled. Concerns have been raised about travel time on this thoroughfare when the team is playing. Bryant Poole, the assistant city manager, said the city would talk to business owners along the road before making any changes.
