Lake Forrest Drive in Sandy Springs has proven to be problematic several times in the past, and now the city is being proactive to eliminate problems before they start.
If the weather cooperates, Sandy Springs will soon shut down part of the street so that crews can manage vegetation, as well as removing trees along the right-of-way. Tree removal is a challenge because the land slopes steeply down to the drive.
City officials said the work had to be done to keep the traveling public safe. When tree roots invade the soil of a steep hillside, they can make it unstable. Lake Forrest has been closed twice because of concerns about the slopes' stability, once in 2013, and again in March this year. In addition to worries about the stability of the earth, there was concern about falling debris.
The city advises motorists to be careful when they drive in the area, and to expect some delays. There will be message boards on-site to inform people before a lane is closed.
Lake Forrest Drive between Burdette Road and Stewart Drive will be shut down between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm next Monday, July 31.
Projects like this can proceed efficiently if officials work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for community residents. This mailer can discuss the purpose of the work, as well as suggesting alternate routes for motorists.
