Dr. Leila Denmark, a beloved pediatrician who had offices in Sandy Springs, as well as Atlanta and in rural Forsyth County, has had a road named in her honor. Although the road opened in April, the dedication is just now taking place.
Dr. Denmark studied at the Medical College of Georgia, where she was the only woman in her class, as well as being only the third female student in the history of the university. She has won recognition as being the first doctor in residence at the Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children in Atlanta. Denmark retired from her practice in 2001 at the age of 103, making her the oldest practicing pediatrician in the world; she pass away in 2011 at the age of 114.
When whooping cough broke out in the 1930s, Denmark began studying the disease. In partnership with Eli Lilly & Company and Emory University, Dr. Denmark developed the first vaccine for pertussis, as well as publishing articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association about her work.
The dedication ceremony is set for 11:00 am this Thursday, June 21, when the mayor and members of the Sandy Springs city council will join Mary Hutcherson, Dr. Denmark's daughter, and her family to unveil the new sign. The ceremony will take place at the Boylston Drive and Denmark Drive intersection.
Events like this might be enhanced if officials work with a flyer printing company on a handout for attendees, recounting the honoree's career.
