Sandy Springs on lookout for new city manager

Sandy Springs will be saying goodbye to its city manager, and will now be looking for a replacement.

John McDonough, who has been the only city manager in Sandy Springs' history, will be leaving soon to take over as Greenville, South Carolina's city manager. He first joined Sandy Springs in 2006, approximately one month after the community was established.

At a recent meeting of the city council, Rusty Paul, the mayor, praised McDonough's work with the city, and then presented a proclamation in McDonough's honor. Mayor Paul noted that he has been a public servant for 42 years, and in all his years has never worked with anyone more honorable, professional, or dedicated to the community than McDonough, who will be greatly missed.

For his part, McDonough said the mayor was giving him too much credit, instead praising the teamwork that enabled him to do his job effectively, and thanking the city for giving him the resources he needed. He also said he'll miss Sandy Springs, but is confident the new city manager will do a fine job. McDonough's final day is Friday, August 2.

For the interim, Peggy Merriss, who was the city manager of Decatur, will fill in from August 2 through December 31. The city will hire Find Good People to search for the next permanent city manager. Letterheads can be created for the use of new staff members in situations like this.
